Detail King would like to say Thanks! to all of the Authorized Licensees in attendance at our annual Authorized Licensee Conference. The 2009 conference was another successful event thanks to all of the input, feedback, and productive conversations. Some of the topics from the conference included: Eco-Friendly Detailing, Express Detailing, Marketing, Promotions, Social Networking, Corporate Culture, Business Expansion, Product Distribution Programs, Employees, New Products, etc. It is very good to hear that many of the Authorized Licensees are still getting a tremendous amount of business in a time when there are a lot of businesses not doing so well. Some of the Authorized Licensees said that they are booked 2 and 3 weeks in advance and have been that way for a while now. This shows everyone that there is plenty of business out there and that hard work and persistence pays off.
The Authorized Licensees that have been in business for many years now are not the only ones that are experiencing this busy schedule. There were quite a few new Authorized Licensees that have been in business for less than a year who were stating that they too were booked 2-3 weeks in advance. These businesses all have one thing in common. They are all constantly going after new business and thinking outside of the box. They are continuously coming up with ways to create new niches and generate more business. These Authorized Licensees are listening to what we have suggested they do in terms of prospecting, promoting, advertising, and networking. As we can see, the hard work certainly pays off! We are always looking for ways to improve our Authorized Licensee Program and there were many great ideas and suggestions brought up at our 2009 Conference. We will try to work these ideas and suggestions into our unique Authorized Licensee Program because it will help the program as well as the Authorized Licensees.
A bi-monthly newsletter will be going out to all active Authorized Licensees beginning this November. 11:57 - 2009-Feb-25Insurance for Auto Detailing & Mobile Auto Detailing BusinessesIf you plan to open an auto detailing business with a stationary location or start a mobile auto detailing business it is important to have insurance to protect your business and your personal assets. This type of insurance is really not that expensive. If you are properly insured an unforeseen event occurs it could put you out of business and you could very quickly lose your personal assets. The most popular insurance for these types of businesses is called Garage Keepers Liability Insurance. Even if you own a mobile detailing business this is the type of policy that you want to have. You want to be covered while you are working on a vehicle and while the vehicle is in your possession. When getting a quote for a policy premium you want to also be sure you are getting coverage for moving, picking up and delivering the vehicles you will be working on. Even if you plan on opening a mobile detailing business you still need coverage for moving customer’s vehicles even if you are only moving a vehicle from the customer’s garage to their driveway. You never know what could happen! You will also want to have your equipment insured against theft. Pressure washers, carpet extractors, vapor steamers, buffers, polishers, compressors and generators are not cheap and it is critical to insure them. The cost to insure this type of equipment is not very expensive at all so it is a “no brainer” to have it included with your policy premium. Usually you will get a quote for a minimum of $100,000 of liability coverage. Typically you want to get quoted on $300,000, $500,000, and a million dollar umbrella policy as well. Believe it or not the premium cost is not that much more for $500,000 worth of coverage versus only $100,000 of coverage. People are “lawsuit happy” today and you can’t afford to be “underinsured.” Most good Garage Keepers Liability policy packages cover the vehicle you are working on against damage and theft, coverage for your equipment, and coverage for pick up and delivery of any vehicle. If you are operating a mobile detailing business your premium costs will be lower than if you are operating out of a shop. You will incur higher premiums operating from a stationary location due to needing coverage for fire, vandalism, signage, glass, and usually more property contents that a mobile detailing operation. If you lease a building, your landlord’s insurance company will want specific values of equipment and assets that will be covered. A typical premium for $500,000 worth of coverage for a mobile detailing operator is about $1800 per year or $150 per month. Most agencies require a 20% down payment to start the policy. If you plan to operate your business at a stationary location, your premium costs will probably be up to 25% higher. If you plan on having employees you will most likely have to pay Workman’s Compensation insurance. This will protect you and your employee in the unlikely event that an injury occurs while working on the job. Your insurance agent can quote you for this too. In many cases for small businesses your state may actually provide you Workman’s Compensation Insurance. Be sure that your business is “rated” properly from the beginning. You are not a repair shop or mobile repair business so be sure that they do not rate you that way. If you are rated this way your Workman’s Compensation rates will be very high and it will take a long time to get your rating changed. Most auto detailing businesses that have employees are rated as “auto laundry” for Workman’s Compensation Insurance. Auto Laundry is one rating above car washing but few levels below auto repair. Have your agent give you a quote on this insurance too. If you are the only individual and have no employees you may not need Workman’s Compensation Insurance. You must check with your state or insurance agency to find out what you need to be properly insured from a legal standpoint. This article is intended to give you a good overview of what you should consider and look for with regards insurance in the auto detailing industry. It is up to you to do your homework and make sure that you are properly insured. You should get at least 2 or 3 quotes and compare costs and coverage. It is not a bad idea to contact an insurance brokerage house that deals with many different carriers. You want a carrier with an A+, A, or A- rating. Typically the insurance carriers that write these types of premiums are also writing premiums for body repair shops, car washes, limousine companies and other automotive types of businesses. Start with your personal insurance company and see if they can give you a competitive quote. If they cannot, they should be able to refer you to an agency that can. You should “shop” your policy every 2-3 years by getting quotes from different insurance companies. This will keep your insurance agent honest and help protect you from paying too much. There are many companies that will write Garage Keepers Liability policies at competitive rates. Fireman’s Fund, As your business grows, your insurance coverage needs will change. You may need additional coverage when working at airports, parking structures, parking lots of office buildings, condo properties, and car dealerships. As a mobile detailing operator you should always have a copy of your policy in your mobile rig just in case a property manager wants to confirm that you have the correct amount of coverage to be working at the particular commercial property. As you hire employees be sure to have your insurance carrier check their driving record before you put them behind the wheel of a customer’s vehicle. If they have a poor driving history you may not be able to extend an employment offer to them, or not allow them to move any of your customer’s vehicles. You do not have to be from 10:21 - 2008-Dec-4Winter Detailing Season - Are You Prepared?I think that any detailing business owner must ramp up their advertising and promotions for the winter season. Many detail business owners, especially the new ones, get scared of this season. Some mobile operators even migrate into warmer climates until Spring arrives. Every month of the colder season dictates a different challenge. With every challenge there is an opportunity waiting to be acted upon. The auto detailing entrepreneur should start planting the seed in mid September or early October to promote Winter protection and maintenance packages and services. This starts with educating the customer why he or she should consider keeping their vehicle cosmetically maintained during the Winter months. Promoting exterior services that will protect and enhance the surfaces against nature’s elements during the winter months is essential. Today's clear coats are better than ever but they still need to be protected against the environmental elements. I would offer a 6 month protection paint sealant/car wash package especially in the fall. The sealant will protect and enhance the painted surface for the duration of the fall and winter months. I would include a good monthly hand wash with that package. Encourage the customer to pay for the complete package up-front and receive a significant discount. Now they are committed to visiting your shop every month over the next 6 months. This gives the shop owner a chance to keep their customer's vehicle cosmetically maintained and offer other services during that period. Other offerings may include; under carriage power washing, carpet and mat soil extraction, plastic carpet protectors installed, glass anti fog treatment, ozone treatment, headlight restoration, and convertible top protection just to name a few. This will be a great opportunity for reoccurring revenue to occur on a monthly basis for your business. Once December is here you have a new challenge now competing with Saint Nicholas. If you properly promoted your Winter Protection Package I spoke about earlier to all your customers in late summer/early fall you will start seeing their faces for their monthly washes. Besides offering the extra services their vehicle may need, you should aggressively promote Gift Certificates and even a "Gift Basket of Car Detail Products" they can purchase and give as presents to their family and friends. Auto detailing gift certificates make great gifts plus you just added a new customer to your data base! Your Gift Basket or "Gift Bucket" may include a 5 gallon bucket, a quart of car wash soap, tire dressing, microfiber drying towel, car wash mitt, and even a quart of express wax. Be sure you include product directions, your company collateral and a coupon towards a discount or free service for a future car detail. Once January is here introducing new promotions and services is critical. We all set new goals for the new year; eating better, getting back in shape, etc. The true auto detailing entrepreneur should also think about promoting services that will "Get Your Car Back In Shape" for the new year. Some services that are not too costly for the consumer but are profitable may include express services like express waxing, interior spruce ups, carpet soil extraction with fabric protection, interior ozone freshen up treatment, etc. These are all good money makers that will make your customers happy with the value and the service you provided. February is now as the slowest consumer spending month of the year. People are looking for excellent values in February. They want their dollar to be stretched and to go a long way. You will want to consider promoting some free services when purchasing a profitable detail service or package. These services and packages may consist of a free hand wash for every complete interior service sold, possibly a free undercarriage power washing with every polishing service sold, and maybe even a complimentary engine shampooing with every complete detail booked. These are just some ideas to create a better value and a good reason to shop with you the month of February. If you’re like me you are eagerly waiting for March to arrive. Winter is still here but the weather is starting to see some improvement and car owners will start to think about getting their cars cleaned up from the havoc that old man winter put on them. You should begin promoting winter clean up services and packages. These services may be custom hand washes, buff and wax services, rock paint chip repair, interior soil extraction, carpet dying, under carriage power washing, wheel polishing, etc. Keep promoting winter clean up services from March through end of May. Our sales of auto detailing supplies are up! People must keep their cars longer. Cosmetic maintenance is getting to be just as important as mechanical maintenance. You must promote that the car care services you offer will help keep your customer’s cars cleaner and protected longer, as well as increase resale and trade-in value. If you do this you should prosper and make it through even the toughest months and the slowest economic times. Cut costs, but don't cut corners! Keep promoting and advertising your business.
